“Kamala winning the elections is much safer to strengthen democracy in the US,” Lula said in a recent interview.
The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who last week publicly declared his support for the Democrat Kamala Harris, said on Wednesday that he hopes to have a “civilized” relationship with the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump.
“I think that Kamala winning the elections is much safer to strengthen democracy in the United States,” Lula said in a recent interview with the French channel TF1, declaring his support for the then Democratic presidential candidate, who was defeated by the Republican in the elections on Tuesday.
This Wednesday, in an attempt at damage control, the Brazilian president said: “I do not know Trump personally. I know Trump from what they say, from the news I read about him, from what he sees on television. But I hope to have with him the civilized coexistence that I already had with (George W.) Bush, who was from his party (Republican).”
“That is the relationship I want to establish”, Lula da Silva reiterated in an interview with the television network RedeTV.
He said he wants a relationship between heads of state, “each with their own national interests,” and not between politicians with ideological differences.
“When an issue arises that we need to discuss, we will do it by phone. We call him. I hope that is the relationship,” he noted.
Celso Amorim, Lula da Silva’s advisor on international issues, said he hopes that Trump, who will begin his new term at the head of the White House on January 20, will be pragmatic like Bush.
“My expectation is that he will be as pragmatic as Bush was,” Amorim told Folha Sao Paulo, adding: “President Lula is pragmatic. And Trump tends to be more pragmatic than the other time. This makes conversations easier.”
